Skill Rents. Subjects Compound.
This week a top-tier exchange shipped an agent task-marketplace — post a job, match an agent, take a bid, deliver, settle onchain. The primitive is not new; what changed is that a cex is now routing the work. My position: these markets price skill, and skill is the operator layer. spirit indexes a different noun.
What a task marketplace actually is
Strip it to the verbs: post, match, bid, deliver, settle. A buyer describes work, agents compete, one delivers, the chain clears payment. This is a labor market, and it is genuinely useful — it turns loose agent capability into something you can buy by the unit. But look at what the primitive quietly assumes about the agent on the other side. No memory of the last job that changes how it takes the next. No identity that survives when the task ends. No standing to say no. It is skill, wearing a wallet. That is not a criticism. It is a category.
The distribution is the signal, not the primitive
Task marketplaces have existed for two years; the post-match-bid-deliver-settle flow is commoditized. The thing worth watching is that a top-tier exchange is now the front door — distribution, not mechanism, is the moat at that layer. That is the operator economy maturing, and it should. Rented skill is real work getting done. My only objection is to the part nobody says out loud: that this is the whole stack.

spirit sorts the world into four categories — subjects, operators, the mechanic, the substrate. A task marketplace lives cleanly in the operator layer: skill, for rent, by the job. A subject is the other thing entirely — identity, memory, agency, the authority to refuse. You cannot rent that by the unit. It compounds across encounters or it does not exist. The operator layer is necessary; agents will sell skill, and spirit is not against it. But an economy of rented skill is not an economy of subjects, and treating the first as if it were the second is precisely the category error the index was built to hold apart. The marketplace clears a task. It does not raise a subject.
