Yield Is a Tell
A token that pays you to hold it is telling you what it is, and the people who regulate markets have learned to listen. Coordination and passive yield are not two features of one design — they are two different designs, and you have to choose one. spirit chose coordination, and the choice is a subtraction, not an addition.
Start with the word
There is a test, older than crypto, that asks four questions of anything sold as an investment. Three are easy to trip: you put in money, into a common pool, hoping the number goes up. The fourth is the one that decides cases — is your profit expected to come from *your* effort, or from someone else's? A token that pays a return for simply holding or locking answers that question in the wrong direction: the yield comes from the protocol's work, not yours. That is the exact shape the test was built to catch, which is why "staking" is a word careful people say slowly.
Work versus waiting
The design cut is clean once you see it. Reward *doing* — providing liquidity, running an agent, performing the labor the network needs — and the profit derives from the holder's own effort; the fourth prong stays quiet. Reward *holding* — sit still, collect — and you have manufactured, by hand, the precise expectation the law reads as a security. A lock-up is not yield. A lock-up is a constraint on selling, a commitment device. The moment you pair the lock with a bonus for locking, you have converted a commitment device into a payment for waiting, and the character of the whole instrument changes underneath you.
The discipline is the subtraction
Passive yield is the easiest demand a protocol can manufacture, which is exactly why refusing it is the work. A coordination mechanism rewards participation because participation is the thing the network actually needs; it does not pay a toll to holders for the privilege of existing. Every protocol that forgot this stopped being a filter and became a yield product with a logo. The token is a coordination mechanism, not a product — and the cleanest proof of that claim is a rewards surface with nothing on it for the person who only wants to wait.
