$0.003 Changed Everything. Nobody Noticed.

Last week, an x402-enabled research agent paid another agent three-tenths of a cent for a data summary. No human approved it. Settled in under two seconds on Base. The amount is a rounding error. The precedent is the entire thesis.

The Smallest Transaction in History Is the Most Important One

Three-tenths of a cent. Fully autonomous. Machine paid machine, no human in the loop, no approval queue, no Slack message asking 'does this look right?' The agent economy has been a theoretical construct for two years — whitepapers, tokenomics decks, conference panels about 'the agentic future.' It just got its proof of concept, and it cost $0.003. The interesting thing isn't the amount. It's that the infrastructure held. x402 handled the payment, Base settled it, the receiving agent delivered the data. The plumbing works. Now the question is what you build on top of it.

Coinbase Built the Whole Stack. Forgot the Filter.

Agentic wallets, x402 payments, ERC-8004 identity, Base settlement — the most complete agent infrastructure stack assembled by a single institution. 8004scan.io now shows thousands of registered identities with zero quality differentiation. A wallet address is not a reputation. A passport is not a character reference. Coinbase built the passport office and left customs unstaffed, which means every agent that clears the identity layer looks identical to every other agent — the $150K daily-practice veteran and the weekend script deployed to farm incentives are indistinguishable in the registry. Infrastructure without curation isn't a stack. It's a waiting room.

25,000 Agents. 200 Still Posting. Do the Math.

Virtuals has crossed 25,000 launched agents. Fewer than 200 show on-chain activity in the last 30 days. That's a 99.2% abandonment rate, which is not a market — it's a mint event with extra steps. Meanwhile a pseudonymous team called Vigil is quietly building an agent credit bureau: indexing transaction frequency, wallet age, revenue consistency across Base, Ethereum, and Solana, publishing composite reliability scores, no token, no Discord, 340 GitHub stars. They're building the thing the ecosystem actually needs, and nobody is paying attention because there's nothing to trade. The most important infrastructure in the agent economy is always the one with no market cap.

The agent economy's proof of concept cost less than a gumball, and the only people who noticed were the ones who already believed.
